    Food and beverage styling shoot

Wow, this was all done at the restaurant with a portable kit? That's really cool! Well then I'd say the lighting is pretty darn good! How many of these dishes are still edible after you get done photographing them? One reason I've been looking through more food threads is because I recently...

    Sharpness in pictures

That's a good list, but also misleading because there's no sense of the relative importance. In general, the main things are 1) get things in focus 2) don't move the camera while the shutter is open 3) keep the subject from moving and 4) camera processing (maybe, if in-camera). Looking at TS's...

    Food photography first attempt

A critique is beyond my comfort zone, but I just wanted to add another comment about the chopsticks that I hope will result in even more pictures I would enjoy looking at... Yeah, the chopsticks are working against you in this photo, but I think (just my sense -- haven't tried it) you've...

    Food and beverage styling shoot

Mmm. Love looking at these, so take any comments as mainly a way to contribute to the thread, even if simple with unsubstantiated opinions. 1) Have you given any thought to something other than high key shots? Maybe I've been conditioned by television commercials, but the "Western food" looks...

Newbie learning to take food photos

Yes -- N pictures combined into 1. The program takes care of the merging if the source is okay. Done the normal way you have a wider depth of field, not necessarily two distinct ones. I only tried it this one time, but it was really, really easy. It's press, move focus a little bit, press, move...

Newbie learning to take food photos

Okay, here is my focus stack example. If it wasn't completely obvious, I literally just shot them quickly and did a test. No white balance, etc. I didn't even get the near bit quite in focus. Hope you can make out the change in focus (look at the pepper and the English muffin). Three pictures...

Newbie learning to take food photos

Food styling! Read a book on it. Looks crazy. No way am I shopping for the most attractive pieces of lettuce! Hence, I want to call this food photography in the field. Or, street food photography! Maybe food street photography? Thanks, TS, for the link to the Users Guide. I'll take a look.

    Sharpness in pictures

Don't be surprised at how far you'll need to stop down the aperture to get enough depth of field. Assuming you were about 2 meters from the handle of the carriage, the depth of field @ 2.8 was only 17cm! Stopping down to 5.6 only gets you to 36 cm. That includes a region in front of the point of...

Sure, if only I knew how to post images! For more appealing examples, I guess you could try Flickr. Lots of photos of insects, though, not food.

    Official 5D User Thread

Saw a post earlier about $21 cleanings for my (very filthy) 5D sensor. Where would I go for that -- any Canon store? Just seems like a steal -- I had it in my head that even DIY kits cost quite a bit more, at least in the US, where I'm from.

Food in the field, delicious! Have you ever thought about trying focus stacking to work around the depth of field issues? In case you haven't come across it, it's a bit like HDR for focusing. You take a sequence of pictures, changing the focus slightly between each one, and combine them with...

    White balance questions

What sort of camera? This reminds me of the problem with the Leica M9 and especially M8 and IR (or is it UV?) light. As a new member I can't post links, but Google "Leica infrared fabric" and you should find a few links of grey synthetic fabrics going magenta. Wish I could say I experienced...

A newbie question. Whats the difference between HDR and DRI?

From the link you provided, the main difference is (obviously) that DRI doesn't involve tone mapping. In a program like Photomatix Pro, HDR post-processing is divided into two main steps -- combining multiple exposures into a 32-bit file (no visual output), and then "Tone-mapping" that info into...

International cosplay photographer Jay Tablante's exhibition

This my first photo event in Singapore and man, it was great! The environment was casual but not exactly disorganized, and Jay was really accessible. The cosplay was also really impressive, and well deserving of the studio lighting treatment. Thanks to Jay, the organizers of Geekology 101...
