My take is that the one w/o VC is good and sharp, but it's kinda noisy and I hate the focusing sound. If you can afford go for the nikon 17-55 f2.8! The focusing is superb and it's my favourite DX lens!

i wld recommend the tokina 11-16mm. i used it with my d90 and it's great! 14-24mm with FX is even more holy hahahahaha! =)
