Well, currently im using the tamron 17-55 f2.8. It functions pretty well at F2.8. very low light lens. however, sharpness is compromised as many people have been raising issues abbout the tamron lens not being sharp at f2.8. bought mine for about $660 from John. Not so sure about KM, but nikkor...

IMO if you're going for portraits and landscape, the wider angle will be more useful to you. for portraits 50mm should be enough. hence, i would go for the 18-50 and get something like a 70 - 200 for the zoom. cheers
