Got my 5D III from Harvey Norman yesterday afternoon ->
4450 (Credit card) -> Body + 2 x original LPE6 batt + Canon EOS bag + screen protector + $30 off for CF card purchase.
I have used the 16-35 II on a 550D... there is no doubt that it produces sharp images with good colours and contrast, but ultimately it was designed to be an ultrawide angle lens for a full frame camera. On a crop it becomes a (very much) overpriced standard zoom lens.
DigitalRevCom recently did a video comparing the different members of Canon's 70-200mm family... check out the link below.

Nope, 100mm is too long for street photography, whether on crop or fullframe... in my opinion. But it makes a nice focal length for macro work on a 1.6x crop sensor.
Actually it works the other way as well. Hybrid IS on the 100L coupled with Al Servo shooting mode allows easy handheld macro shots without the need for a tripod.
Haven't used the 16-35 I but the MK II also suffers from quite abit of distortion at 16mm at the corners and is relatively soft at the edges as well. The centre is very sharp though, i would say almost approaching the level of a 70-200.
Sure. Took some photos with the 2 lenses, all taken handheld with a 5D II, with both the lenses at f4 apertures -
1) 70-200 f4L IS at 135mm:
2) 70-200 f2.8L IS II at 135mm:
3) 70-200 f4L IS at 200mm:
4) 70-200 f2.8L IS II at 200mm:
70-200 is too tight as a walkabout lens on a 1.6x crop, but does very well in this respect on a full frame sensor.. at least in my opinion.
And yes, the 4L IS makes a far better lens for overseas trips, for its (much) lighter weight and more compact body.
