    Which metering mode to use 90% of the time?

    Most cameras' spot metering is only in the centre of the frame which coincides with the centre AF point, except for 1D where the spot can be tied to the AF point. Either way, spot metering doesn't improve the AF speed or accuracy.

    50mm doomed beyond repair?

    something similar happened to mine a few years back.. CSC quoted me $110 after discount to repair.. fatigue tried but couldnt fix it.. in the end, i got a second hand piece with warranty for around $110 also. haha.
